The Catholic Monarchs used the Alcazar as the seat of set their residence and headquarters for eight years. Several diplomatic and military operations were planned and carried out from here during their reign, which led to the final surrender of Granada. Furthermore, one of the most important discoveries of history, the Discovery of America, started between the walls of this fortress. The Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon reached their peak thanks to this discovery. The first episode to this historical event took place in the Alcazar, where Columbus met the Catholic Monarchs asking them for funding to open a new commercial route to the Indies. The conquest of the Canary Islands was also planned in the Alcazar. The monarchs’ stay here is commemorated by a sculpture of the Queen of the Canary Islands walking close to the fortress. The statue is in located in one of the galleries near the Moorish courtyard.
