Roman Column

This large vertically fluted pillar shaft remains in situ on its base, roughly four metres below the level of the current 'patio morisco'. It was part of a large building with an arcade. Some of these arcade columns have been recorded in situ during excavations carried out in the so-called 'Patio de Mujeres' (Ladies' Patio).
The structure which the column was part of was located within the Late Antiquity castellum. It would have been the point of origin for the building of the current Christian Alcázar and was built with material taken from other Roman public buildings. Among this material, one pillar capital taken from the Alcázar is currently to be found in Plaza de Séneca.
