Created by Mateo Inurria, this bust can be considered to be the first image of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, military man born in Montilla in 1453. The Bust of the Great Captain is an academic work dates back to his time as a student. The work gives expression to the features of another sculpture carried out by his professor, Bellver with meticulous precision.
Gonzalo de Córdoba is depicted dressed in a fashion typical of Italians of that period. The medallion which he was presented with by the Pope Alexander VI can be seen displayed on his armour chest plate. He got it capturing the city of Ostia, recovering it from the French. The Great Captain rescued the city and the King of Naples, don Fadrique, conferred him the title of Duke of Santangelo.
The original in plaster was in a delicate state of preservation. On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of his birthday, this work was reproduced in bronze.
