Great geometric mosaic (1 of 1)

A great Roman mosaic found in 1959 during subsoil excavations in Plaza de la Corredera
The design is geometric and white, with use of black and red in some areas.
The composition sketch is formed by three rectangular lines with peltarions and double colour imbrications interweaved.
In the central part, there is a bunch of five laurel leaves arranged in a circle. This wreath is, itself enclosed by a square. Boxes are separated by eight pointed stars formed using rhombuses. The edges are decorated by peltarions separated by dark-toned triangles.
The whole mosaic is framed by a wide white line on double-lined black. Inside, there are straight and continuous branches of fine leaves on the borders; in the centre, two black dolphins are shown.
In the collection of mosaics found in the subsoil of Plaza de la Corredera, motifs similar to the marine and geometric motifs seen in this mosaic can be observed.
The decoration of this mosaic was common across the entire Roman Empire. Famous works are located in Avignon, Antakya or Italica.
