According to some experts, the gardens were laid during the reign of Abd-ar-Rahman II; in the same year, the great aquaduct was built. To supplement the water supplied by the river, a deviation of the aqueduct was also constructed to meet the needs of the palace. When Abd-ar-Raman III moved the court to Medina Azahara, the gardens were damaged. However, when the palatinate city was destroyed, the Alcázar was reestablished as the royal residence. The cultivation and expansion of the gardens and the vegetable garden were resumed.
