The garden was restored after the Reconquest when the cultivation and extension of the gardens and vegetable gardens was resumed. The colourful gardens could be seen in all their splendour until Queen Isabella I of Castile, who had fallen ill ordered that the Albolafia water wheel be stopped, as she found the noise that it created to be disturbing. Consequently, the gardens ceased to be irrigated because the naturally flowing waters and streams of the Albaida proved insufficient.
